Undergraduate Programs

Requirements for Jewish Studies Major

(Revised May 24, 2001)

Undergraduate students can develop a comprehensive and well-rounded interdisciplinary major in Jewish Studies. This 50-hour major calls for:

Four quarters of Hebrew language (101-104) or its equivalent as the basis upon which the major program rests. In addition, the following are required:

A. Jewish Thought and Practice.

Two courses chosen from Jewish Studies 201, Philosophy 321, Philosophy 323, Philosophy 521, Hebrew 376, or CMRS/Hebrew 216 10 hours

B. Hebrew Language and Literature

Two courses beyond the 104 level in the original language.

C. Jewish History

Two of these must be chosen from History 330.01, 330.02 and 530.02. At least one course must be taken at the 500 level or above. 15 hours

D. Jewish Study Electives

Courses must be at the 200 level or above, with at least 10 hours at the 400 level or above. Jewish Studies 489 (Jewish Internship) may be applied toward the elective requirement. (Students who have completed Yiddish 101-104 need only complete 10 elective hours, 5 of which must be at the 400 level or above). 15 hours
