The Early Modern Yiddish Book and its Function in Ashkenazi Society

Shlomo Berger, professor of Yiddish Culture
University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Thursday, February 11, 2010, 4:00 pm, 175 West 18th Ave, Science and Engineering Library

Print technology, as introduced in the late sixteenth century, played a crucial role in establishing Yiddish as an Ashkenazi vernacular. Yiddish books formed a basis of a new cultural outing on which modern Eastern European Jews relied and could go on and develop a secular and high Yiddish culture. It regulated forms of religious devotion and offered its readers first glimpses into the European non-Jewish culture. Professor Berger’s lecture will demonstrate essential roles of Yiddish books within a conservative Ashkenazi society on the verge of modernity.
