The Emily and George Severinghaus Beck Education Abroad Scholarship
The Emily and George Severinghaus Beck scholarship is for students who wish to study Yiddish in the United States and abroad.
This year’s recipient is Isaac Back-Gaal, who is completing an MFA in creative writing. Isaac attended the YIVO-Bard Uriel Weinreich Summer Program in Yiddish Languages, Literature, and Culture.

The Leah Metchnick Godofsky and Martin R. Godofsky Scholarship in Memory of Clara U. and Abraham Mayer Metchnick
Upon consultation with the faculty, the Student Awards Committee of the Melton Center for Jewish Studies at The Ohio State University awards $1,200 annually to one undergraduate student who is enrolled in Jewish studies courses and demonstrates excellence in the classroom.
This year we are pleased to recognize Ethan Ostrov with this scholarship. Ethan graduated this year with a double major in history and political science.
The Charlotte Susan Roth Memorial Fund Essay Contest
The Roth Essay Contest is open to any currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate student who has written a paper on a topic related to Jewish studies from autumn semester to spring semester. Essay topics can include any aspect of Jewish studies (Bible, language, literature, history, philosophy, sociology, culture of Israel, rabbinics, arts, etc.).
First Place: Joshua Kasimov for his essay, “On the Influence of Jewish Folk Legend on the English Ghost Story.” Joshua is a second-year student with a major in statistics
Second Place: Adam Rahl for his essay, “Moral Messaging in Oral History: Investigating the Role of DIE SCHÖNHEIT in Ernst Walter Schwarze’s Testimony as a Holocaust Survivor.” Adam is a third-year student with a double major in German and biochemistry and a minor in LGBTQ+ studies.
Diane Cummins Hebrew Prize
The Cummins Prize in Hebrew is a scholarship awarded by the Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures to benefit those studying Hebrew and/or Yiddish.
This year's winners are Jake Danon and Stephen Scharf, both with minors in Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
