Meet Ira Glasser. Baseball lover and civil rights champion, who, as leader of the ACLU for 23 years, took it from a small grassroots operation on the verge of bankruptcy, to the juggernaut it is today. On the occasion of the ACLU’s centennial, we follow Ira as he reflects on his activism, beginning in 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier in baseball, through to his defense of the right of neo-Nazis to demonstrate in Skokie. Amid today’s high-profile controversies surrounding free speech, racial equality and antisemitism, Glasser’s story is as timely as ever.
