Michael Swartz, professor in the Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures, has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for work on a book about ritual expertise and social structure among the Jewish community in Roman Palestine (third to sixth century CE). Swartz specializes in the cultural history of Judaism in late antiquity, rabbinic studies, early Jewish mysticism and magic and ritual studies
